The Live-Action Scooby Doo Film from 2002 is my Favorite Movie and Here’s Why

by Ainsley Kohli

Many things happened in the year 2002 worth noting and yet I will be noting none ofthem except the day I was born (December 30th, 2002 in case anyone was wondering). There was something before me though. Something I believe we don’t speak about enough as a society and that is the live-action Scooby-Doo adaptation, simply titled Scooby Doo. I watched this movie on repeat as a kid and am still watching it on repeat as an adult.
For me this film has a “rewatchability” factor like no other and that is a testament as to why it takes the spot of my favorite movie amongst other reasons which I’ll get into in due time, don’t worry. On average, I believe I have watched this movie at least twice a month purely because I feel like I can never get sick of it.
Going onto one of the main reasons I love this movie so much is because of the cast.Scooby Doo as a franchise doesn’t really give much in terms of the character department. They each have one defining characteristic that helps the audience distinguish one from the other, so how might they make this more interesting to a wider movie audience? The answer is having a stellar cast.
Matthew Lillard playing Shaggy… genius. Could not have casted it better myself if I even tried. His performance was so Shaggy-like, he continued to voice Shaggy for years after. I see that man and I only see Shaggy.
Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred was so much fun to watch. At the end of the day, Fred is just a good looking, dumb guy who happens to like making plans and Freddie Prinze Jr. nailed that energy with lines such as “dorky chicks like you turn me on too!”, referring to Velma, or “I can look at myself naked,” in reference to him being in Daphne’s body.
This movie is also just an ode to the 2000s which is such a fun take on this franchise, asScooby-Doo is typically depicted in a more retro vibe from the 60s and 70s. This film is so early 2000s from the outfits, to the hairstyles of all the other people on the island (the one character that comes to mind is one of the college kids with the spiky hair that gets thrown by the brainwashed girl, to the music (shout out to Sugar Ray for making a guest appearance). It is a time capsule of that era and I love it! All of Daphne’s outfits really ate (specifically her mini v-neck dress with the go go boots. Mega slay).
With 2000s fashion coming back into style, a lot of the outfits worn for this film can be seen as back in style again. This movie never took itself too seriously. Everything was always fun and colorful as can be seen in keeping the color schemes for all the characters very true to the source material while also still being relevant for the time period they were going for.
If you have not seen this movie in a hot minute, I beg of you to go watch it just forfunsies. No one needs a serious film all the time. Sometimes you just need to go back to simpler times. This movie is my simpler times.
